Dolls are powerful spiritual tools in Slavic tradition. Everyone heard about so-called “voodoo dolls” which are used to harm. What is the difference in Slavic tradition?
It is possible that dolls can be used to harm others in Slavic tradition but I personally never heard it. Yes, there is of course black magic but it is usually used in different means to hurt someone, not dolls. Slavic dolls are used to attract certain things in life, fix what is wrong, clean bad situations, “catch” bad spirits, and so on. Dolls are usually used to improve your own life not to destroy someone. And quite often dolls were integrated into family life in all the stages. There were special Slavic dolls which were made during marriage and before that for good life, for good conception, during different stages of pregnancy, for fast and good delivery of child… When the child was growing up there was an initiation process and it was quite often done with dolls. For 3 year old child it was a tradition to make a simple doll for his parents to express gratitude for them. A child was telling his or her parents “Thank you mum and dad for putting me on my feet”. “Put on my feet” is a colloquium which means that they feed him or her, dressing up, taking care and now he can take care of himself. Quite often a child receives a space on the table and starts helping parents in small tasks.
And every age was connected with some dolls. And even during adulthood, some dolls were helping in doing housework, helping men outside, during marriage, etc. Slavic dolls were everywhere and it was integrated with every part of human life.
