Thunder candles come in at least three types, each serving a unique purpose and symbolic significance in ritual practices.
1. Purifying Candles
The first type of thunder candles is the purifying candles. In addition to wax and a wick, these candles contain herbs that ward off evil spirits. These herbs, known as “бесогонные травы,” include wormwood, nettle, juniper, and St. John’s wort. The term “бес” refers to the internal distortion within a person that hinders them but often goes unnoticed.
2. Empowering Candles
The empowering candles, also known as giving or filling candles, contain herbs that empower or fill the space. Different herbs are used for specific purposes, and it is essential not to mix herbs of different intentions in one candle. Separating purifying and empowering herbs into distinct candles is crucial for the effectiveness of the ritual.
3. Sacrificial Candles
The third type of thunder candles is the sacrificial candles, known as “покутные свечи.” These candles are not meant for purification or empowerment but serve as offerings to the Gods. By using specific herbs, wax, and colors, individuals communicate a message to the Gods. For example, adding thyme herb to a sacrificial candle is an offering to Lada, as thyme is associated with her.
Understanding which herb corresponds to which deity requires studying the Gods as forces or energies. Gods are not merely beings but represent specific powers. In sacrificial candles, at least three components are essential. Along with the herb, a small stone could be placed at the base of the candle. The significance of the stone should align with the message you wish to convey to the specific Goddess.
Additionally, an essential oil is added to such candles, symbolizing the connection to one’s spirit. Mostly representing the element of wind, the oil communicates to the Gods how you intend to overcome internal distortions and the desired outcome of your work.
Using essential oil in a sacrificial candle can be a way to seek guidance from the Gods. Sometimes, when you wish to overcome a particular distortion within yourself but are unsure how to do so, creating such a candle may lead to receiving knowledge and insights from various sources.
